Panzers on the Russian Steppe

A pair of Panzerkampfwagen IIIs (probably Ausf.Js) flank a Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.G or H. as seen through the view port of an accompanying AFV. All of these panzers have turret and hull “Schurzen” armor skirts, which were designed to protect their thinner sides from Soviet anti-tank rifle fire. Note the tactical number, "560" on the turret Schurzen of the Pz.Kpfw.lll at left, and what may be a periscope projecting from the roof of the Pz.Kpfw.lIl at right. If this is so, the panzer is probably a Beobachtungspanzerwagen (armored artillery observation vehicle).

Stu.Haubitze 42 in the Eastern Front

In the summer of 1944, the Soviet steamroller smashed into the Heeresgruppe Mitte, the approximate time and place of this photo. This Sturmgeschütz-Haubitze 42 (Type 42 Assault Howitzer) belongs to an unknown Sturmgeschütz Brigade.

StuG of Paul Dahms with Fallschirmjäger

Studying the figures in a given photo often provides a key to identifying a unit and/or location. The Fallschirmjäger (paratrooper) in the foreground is from the 2. Fallschirmjäger-Division. The Geschütz Kommandant (Assault Gun Commander) is Oberleutnant Paul Dahms, later a Ritterkreuzträger (Knight's Cross holder), the chief of the 1.Batterie / Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 286 (1st Coy commander / 286th Assault Gun Brigade). Both units met and fought together during December 1943 - January 1944, southeast of Kirovograd.

The Liberation of German Forces in Kovel

Huge congratulations to the relief force who attacked and liberated the city of Kovel which had been surrounded by the Soviet Army in mid-March 1944. The relief force consisted of elements from 5. SS Panzer Division Wiking, 4. Panzer-Division and 5. Panzer-Division, and 131. Infanterie-Division which together broke through the Soviet lines on 5 April 1944 and established a permanent linkup with the defenders in Fortress Kovel led by SS-Gruppenführer Herbert Otto Gille.

A Column of Panthers Approaching the Colosseum

A column of Panthers from I.Abteilung / Panzer-Regiment 4 approaching the Colosseum on the Via dei Fori Imperiali in February 1944. III./Pz.Rgt.4 was converted to a Panther Abt. with four Kompanies on 5 May 1943. On 19 October 1943, it was renamed I./Pz.Rgt.4 after I./Pz.Rgt.4 was transferred to form schwere Panzer-Abteilung 507, and sent to Italy in early February 1944 with 76 Panthers.
