SS-Standartenführer Johannes-Rudolf Mühlenkamp

SS-Standartenführer Johannes-Rudolf Mühlenkamp, the commander of the Wiking Division’s Panzer Regiment and from 12 August 1944 the commander of the Division, photographed in the summer of 1944, east of Warsaw. During the battles around Warsaw against Red Army which lasted from 4 August until 3 September 1944, the “Vikings” destroyed or captured 151 enemy tanks, 19 assault guns, 13 self-propelled guns and armored cars, 176 artillery pieces, 94 machine-guns and anti-tank rifles and five aircraft. Mühlenkamp’s forces fought successfully against overwhelming odds, and while serving as commander of the Wiking Division, on 21 September 1944 he was awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight’s Cross. Mühlenkamp remained as leader of the Wiking Division until 9 October 1944.
