Men of Wiking Division in the Battle of Poland 1944

Additional views of command and control vehicles of the 5. SS-Panzer-Division “Wiking” at the start of the brutal campaign to defend Poland in the summer of 1944. Of interest is the clock painted on the gun shield on the Sd.Kfz.251, which allowed the vehicle commander to rapidly assess the primary direction of any threat according to the clock system. Although no rank identification can be seen in this photograph, the two soldiers in the foreground are officers, as denoted by their SS version of the popular “crusher” officer cap
